There are many misconceptions about anti-reflux surgery (Nissen Fundoplication). In this article, we are going to discuss several myths and facts about anti-reflux surgery.
Myth: I Will Not Be Able to Burp or Vomit
The surgeons have tools to help them determine the accurate size to shape the esophagus, so it has all the prior functions it did before surgery, minus the reflux of course!
Fact: Patients who Receive Nissen Fundoplication Have Reduced Symptoms for 15+ Years
Functional studies show Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication produces control of symptoms in 80% of patients up to 15 years.
Myth: I Will Have to Follow a Liquid Diet for 6 Months
In the past, a liquid diet was the recommendation after fundoplication but never for 6 months. The current advice is that the patient should start with a liquid diet for a week or two and then move onto semi-solid food for another few weeks before resuming a normal diet at around the 5-6 week mark. This works for almost all patients; some people may be on a liquid or semi-solid diet for longer, but no one will be on a liquid diet for 6 months.
Fact: Your Stomach is Smaller Post Operation
The procedure involves wrapping the top of the stomach around and stitching it to the bottom of the esophagus which therefore lessens the size of the stomach slightly. Individuals often feel as if they become full quicker, especially for 2-3 months post-operation.
Myth: Nissen Fundoplication is a Major Surgery
This is a minimally invasive procedure. The operation is performed under general anesthesia and typically only takes 1 to 2 hours. Your surgeon will use laparoscopic surgery as this is associated with less pain, less scarring and a faster return to normal activities.
Myth: Recovering from Anti-Reflux Surgery is Long and Painful
Pain after laparoscopic surgery is generally mild and you can go back to light activities at home immediately after surgery. This can include walking and using stairs. We do ask that you avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities until about 4 weeks after surgery.
